The VCM used as a preservative for the transport of clinical specimens containing Viruses, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma (Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum) from the collection site to the testing laboratory. Finally, it inhibits or slows the growth of bacteria or fungi found in the sample.
The tube is plastic with a screw cap (PP ø12.5x85mm- 9ml max, temp. 123 to -85 °C) and contains glass beads for better diffusion of the sample during stirring.
The VCM Transport Medium, helps maintain the viability of viruses, Chlamydia and Mycoplasma and inhibits or delays the growth of microbial infectious agents. At 15-22 °C the viruses are maintained in a constant number for 12 hours. After 24 hours their number is reduced by 30% and at 48 by 50%.
Chlamydia and Mycoplasma at 15-22 °C are maintained in constant numbers for 12 hours.
After 24 hours their number decreases by 20% and at 48 by 30%. At -10 to -15 °C the viruses are maintained in constant numbers for 72 hours.
Chlamydia and Mycoplasma at -10 to -15 °C are maintained in constant numbers for 48 hours. After 72 hours their number decreases by 20% and in 5 days by 30%. In 10 days 15 – 20% remain alive.
Gelatin derived from collagen and albumin from bovine serum are proteins and significantly help in the viability of viruses and bacteria. Yeast Extract is rich in vitamins, mainly of the B complex. Sodium chloride regulates the osmotic balance of the material and provides ions. Sucrose is a source of energy. A series of buffer salts provide electrolytes (Ca, Mg, Na ions, etc.). Three antibiotics and an antifungal inhibit the growth of unwanted microorganisms.
Phenol red is an indicator that, by changing color (yellow acidic pH, red alkaline pH), indicates possible growth of unwanted bacteria and fungi.
