Meat peptones provide nitrogen, vitamins, minerals and amino acids necessary for growth. Yeast extract is the source of vitamins, especially of the B group. Chromogenic substrates are broken down by specific microbial enzymes that release insoluble colored compounds which adhere to the microbial cell membrane. Sodium chloride provides essential electrolytes for transport and regulates the osmotic balance of the material. Bacteriological agar is the solidification agent.
